Mary Ella

My great grandmother Mary Ella. She had 10 children. I would have liked to have known her. I found her picture in my grandmother’s photo album and I was drawn to her beautiful expression and amazing hat. I scanned a copy and put it away. Years later, I decided to paint her.

As it turns out, the painting sparked a conversation with her last living daughter that led me to the realization that all of the photos of her life were destroyed in a fire. All but a few, including the one I saved. I was grateful to be able to share the photo and painting with her daughter, my great aunt Margaret.

This piece is part of my private collection and is not for sale.

Mary Ella was part of 3 Square Art Gallery’s juried art exhibition Color25.
